Çoğu objenin kafamızda bir cinsi kimliği vardır zaten; reklamların bize dayatmaları olsun, bizim kendi deneyimlerimiz olsun… Bu yüzden belki de işlevinden daha çok kadını, kadınsılığı temsil edişi ile öne çıkan bir objedir makyaj masası ya da diğer bir deyişle tuvalet masası. Günün başında ve günün sonunda mutlaka ziyaret ettiğimiz bu mobilyaya kadınlar ne zamandan beri ihtiyaç duyuyor, nasıl bu hale geldi? Çok eskilere dayanan bu nabız, şu an kullandığımız bu objelere ilham veriyor. Makyaj yapmayı ritüel haline getirip zarif ve sofistike boyutlara ulaştırıyor.
Aslında makyaj yapmak için bir alana, yüzeye ihtiyaç duyduğumuz zamanlar ta mısır dönemine kadar dayanıyor. Makyaj tarihi nadir parfümler, egzotik yağlar ve aletleri koymak için dekoratif kutu üreten mısırlılardan başlıyor.
M.Ö. 1814-1805 Mısır 1760’lar Fransa 1800’ler Amerika
Ortaçağda bir masanın etrafı kumaş ile çevrelenir, yemek yemek, mektup yazmak ve süslenmek maksadı ile kullanılırdı. Bu mobilya 17. yy a kadar uzun bir zaman tasarımdan uzak kaldı, kadınların yıkanmak, hazırlanmak ve giyinmek için kullandıkları özel odalarındaki (boudoir) mobilyalardan sadece biriydi. Bu oda süslenmenin, kişisel bakımın yapıldığı yer olmasının yanı sıra gizli sevgililer ile görüşülen yerler idi; ressamları bu yasak bölge çok çekmiş olmalı ki, kadınların o odada geçirdiği zamanı anlatan birçok tasvir bulabiliyoruz.
Jean-Francois Bastide 1752’de yazdığı La Petite Maison romanında bakın boudoir’i nasıl anlatmış;
“ Duvarları tamamen cam ile kaplı ve birleşim yerleri özenle dalları ve yaprakları ile aranjman yapılmış ağaç kütükleri ile gizlenmiş. … süzülerek içeri giren gün ışığı ile doğal bir çardak etkisi var. Prenses, kameriyede etrafta bulunan menekşe, yasemin ve gül kokularını almak için tam ortaya gül ağacından oymalı, yeşil ve altın saçakları, değişik boyutlarda minderleri ile bir divan koymuş.”
Bugün bizim de bildiğimiz anlamda tuvalet masası (dressing table) Avrupa’da 17. yy sonlarında şekillendi. Kadınlara ayrılmış özel oda daha çok çalışma ve etkinliklere ayrıldı, süslenme için tek bir mobilya üzeri kullanılmaya başlandı. Tasarımı ve ince işçiliği ile sosyal statüyü belirten objelerden biri oldu. Özellikle iki güzel fransız kadın tuvalet masasının şıklaşmasına katkıda bulundu.
Kral Louis XV’in en ünlü metresi Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), her sabah konuklarını makyaj masasında otururken ağırlama ritüelini gerçekleştirerek popülerleştirdi. Çok zevkliydi ve sadece o dönemdeki en iyi, en ünlü mobilyacıları işe aldı. Fransız porselen sanatında “Mme Pompadour Modası” ekolünün doğmasına neden oldu. Sèvres Porselen Fabrikası 1757 yılında ürettiği ender güzellikteki pembe seramik boyasına “Pompadour Pembesi” (Rosa Pompadour) adını verdi.
Kral Louis XVI’nın karısı Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) moda, sanat ve tasarım konularında etkin rol oynadı. Zeki bir kadın olan kraliçe, politik beceriksizliğini bildiği 16. Louis’nin üzerinde yavaş yavaş etki kurdu. Görkemli hayatı ve güzelliği ile tanınan Marie Antoinette birçok sanat eserine de esin kaynağı olmuş, ayrıca porselenlere ve tuvallere de resimleri yapılmıştır.
18.yy a gelindiğinde, bu oda sadece lüks evlerde kaldı fakat makyaj masası yatak odasına geçerek her evde varlığını devam ettirdi. Sadece süslenmeye dair kullanılan feminen odaklı bu mobilyanın günümüze kadar tasarım dünyasında nasıl vücut bulduğunu, gereksinimlere ve yaşam tarzlarının değişimine göre nasıl modernleştiğini kadınlar günü vesilesi ile size aktarmak istedim.
