Noel ağacı veya yılbaşı ağacı, Noel ve yılbaşında kullanılmak üzere, ışıklarla ve çeşitli süs eşyalarıyla donatılmış çam ağacıdır.
Noel ağaçları Pagan (tek tanrı inancı öncesi) geleneklerinden gelen bir ritüeldir.
Yaprak dökmeyen ağaçları ve çelenkleri ölümsüz yaşamın simgesi olarak kullanmak, eski Mısırlıların, Çinlilerin ve Yahudilerin ortak bir geleneği idi. Avrupalı paganlar arasında yaygın olan ağaca değer verme ya da kutsal sayma, Hristiyanlığı benimsemelerinden sonra, İskandinavyalıların şeytanı korkutup kaçırmak ve Noel zamanında kuşlar için bir ağaç hazırlamak üzere ev ve ambarlarını noelde ağaçlarla donatma geleneği biçiminde sürdü.Almanya‘da da kış ortasına rastlayan tatillerde evin girişine ya da içine bir Yule ağacı konuyordu.
Günümüzdeki Noel ağacının Almanya‘nın batısından kaynaklandığı düşünülmektedir. Ortaçağda Adem ve Havva‘yı canlandıran bir oyunun ana dekoru, cennet bahçesini temsil eden ve üzerinde elmaların bulunduğu bir çam ağacıydı. Adem ve Havva yortusunda (24 Aralık) Almanlar evlerine böyle bir cennet ağacı dikerler, üzerine Komünyon‘daki kutsanmış ekmeği simgeleyen ince, hamursuz ekmek parçaları asarlardı; bunların yerini daha sonra değişik biçimlerdeki çörekler aldı. Ayrıca bazı yerlerde İsa‘yı simgeleyen mumlar eklendi. Noel mevsiminde ağaçla aynı odada Noel piramidi de bulunurdu. 16. yüzyılda Noel piramidi ve cennet ağacı birleşerek Noel ağacını oluşturdu.
Tarihçesinden sonra biraz da dekorasyondaki yerinden bahsedelim. Noel süslemeleri hakkında en iyi şeylerden biri ağaç dekorasyonu olduğudur. Farklı ülkelerde ve farklı kültürlerde insanlar tarafından süslenen çam ağaçlarının birçok çeşitli örnekleri vardır. Kendine özgü dekoru ile genellikle büyük mekanların (alışveriş merkezleri, meydanlar vs.) ortasında evlerin ise köşesinde ve şöminenin yanı başında yerini alır yılbaşı ağaçları.
Çoğu milletin coşkuyla beklediği yeni yıl yaklaşınca ağaçlar süslenmeye başlanır. Mekana uygun süs eşyaları ve yeni stillere merak saran herkesin ayrı ayrı kullandığı süs eşyalarıyla bir çok çeşitli ağaçlar ile karşılaşabiliriz.
Yılbaşı ağacını simgeleyen farklı tasarımları da göz ardı etmeyelim. Tamamen kendimiz de bir yılbaşı ağacı yapabiliriz. Bu sefer, sadece ağacı süsleme işini değil de tamamını kendi ellerimizle yapalım.
