Güzelliği ve kendine has özellikleriyle binlerce yıldır değerini kaybetmeyen gümüş, yılın her döneminde sofralara ışıltılı bir görünüm veriyor. Işığı en iyi yansıtan metal olan cilalanmış gümüş elektriğin icat edilmesinden önceki dönemlerde sofraları hem aydınlatır hem de dekoratif amaçlı kullanılırdı. Kolayca biçimlendirilebilen gümüş, dövülerek ince plaka, tel yada şerit haline getirilebilir ve istenilen forma kolayca sokulabilir. 17.yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Çin’den getirilen çay İngiltere’de öne çıkması, gümüş kasenin icadına vesile olmuştur. Gümüş, ısının ve elektriğin en iyi iletkeni ve buna ek olarak kendi kendini sterilize edebilen bir madde olduğu için yeme ve içme ile ilgili objelerde özellikle tercih edilmiştir. Bakterilerin yüzeyinde barınamaması nedeniyle gümüş, çatal bıçak takımlarının yanı sıra tıbbi aletlerin yapımında da kullanılmıştır. 18. Yüzyıldan 20. Yüzyıla kadar varlıklı evlerin sofraları gümüş objelerle donatılıyordu. Çok dayanıklı bir metal olduğu için bunların çoğu günümüze de ulaşmıştır.
Sofralarda ilk olarak 18. Yüzyılın ilk yarısında yer almaya başlayan, gümüşten imal edilmiş ve kızarmış ekmek koymaya yarayan ekmeklik, bir İngiliz buluşudur. Açık tel halkaların kullanılması kızarmış ekmek dizmenin en uygun yöntemiydi ve bu teller bükülerek farklı formlar alabiliyordu. Victorian döneminde gümüş ekmeklikler üzerinde çalışan en ünlü isim Christopher Dresser’dı(1834-1904).
Gümüşlerde ayar damgaları, İngiltere’de 1300’lü yıllardan beri kullanılmaktadır. İngiliz gümüşü genelde dört adet damgaya sahiptir: İmalatçının damgası, saf gümüşün yasal standardını simgeleyen damga, ayar değerinin verildiği yeri gösteren şehir ve tarih damgası. Büyüteç yada kuyumcu gözlüğü yardımı ile gümüş eşyaların üzerindeki bu bilgiler rahatlıkla deşifre edilebilir.
İyi durumdaki gümüşler, kararmayı önlemek için belli aralıklarla yapılan standart temizleme dışında başka prosedürlere ihtiyaç duymazlar. Temizleme aşamasında gümüşü aşındırmayan iyi bir temizleyici yada cila kullanmak gerekir. Daha sonra sabunlu ılık suda yıkayarak tortularından arındırıp duruladıktan sonra kurulanmalıdırlar. Gümüş gereğinden fazla cilalanmamalıdır, aşırı cila kaplamaya zarar verecektir. Gümüşler kesinlikle bulaşık makinesinde yıkanmamalıdır.
